Following its announcements of 5 May 2021 updating the New Industrial Strategy proposed in 2020, the European Commission has further indicated that it’s going to rely fairly heavily on trade to deliver on the most important challenges confronted by our economies and societies in Europe. This is particularly the case in relation to sustainability, digital transformation, and global competitiveness, in addition to the need to overcome the disaster provoked by the Covid-19 pandemic. The EU Recovery and Resilience Plan launched in Spring 2021 is basically constructing on the capability of European business to design and produce the constructing blocks of the dual green and digital transition. At the same time, the EU is shaping a dense regulatory framework that doesn’t at all times assist the liberty and flexibility needed for firms to develop and compete globally.
The European know-how industries, and specifically our pumps, compressors, taps and valves sectors, have for a very long time thought of the enhancement of their global competitiveness inside the challenges of societal and environmental challenges, notably by contributing to the preparation of energy effectivity and ecolabel rules. In parallel, digitalisation has provided elevated opportunities and introduced new challenges, together with debates on the suitable regulatory stage (sharing of industrial knowledge, synthetic intelligence, cybersecurity, etc).
These developments, amidst ever extra fierce worldwide competitors, require that public authorities and industry within the EU work more and more extra intently to design and deploy strategies that reinforce our competitiveness and our contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This will be the subject of the preliminary debate kicking off our Joint EU Policy Conference, which will convey together key policy makers from the three EU coverage establishments in cost of the Industrial Strategy and three Executives representing and illustrating the achievements loved, and challenges nonetheless confronted, by these three key sectors of trade.
Specific Technical and Policy Issues

It subsequently falls to sector particular commerce organisations, such as Europump, CEIR and Pneurop, to determine and advise on these technical and coverage points most relevant to their respective sectors. In our particular arena, that relates, in fact, to the manufacture, distribution and use of pumps and all pump associated equipment – a huge and essential subset of trade, given the width and breadth of pump applications.
Against this backdrop, one of the major concerns when figuring out the core themes for the joint conference was to take care of a direct reference to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). Within this focus, the three associations intend to highlight how, together with the significance for firms to handle technical aspects impacting their every day enterprise operations, they contemplate the positive position of trade in addressing societal challenges. Indeed, all the periods will have a technical theme matching the most acceptable UN SDG, and with representation from the European Commission together with technical consultants from trade and/or analysis institutes, they may every be reflective of the present legislative terrain, as it pertains to pumps and pumping methods in the following key areas:
Circular Economy & Eco-design (Relevant UN Sustainable Development Goal no. 12: Responsible Consumption and Production)

The restriction of use of supplies and substances of concern (Relevant UN Sustainable Development Goal no. 6: Clean Water and Sanitation)
The regulatory and legislative landscape across Europe is turning into more and more advanced, and business, in all its guises, must be conscious and ready for what is coming.
